THEY left the grove and walked across the lamplit campus. “I’ll see you tomorrow in class,” Kurt told him with a small smile.

“Okay,” Freddie agreed, and they parted company. Freddie watched Kurt until he was near his building and then walked briskly off the campus and down the side street. As he approached the front door, the house seemed quiet, which he was grateful for. He tried the front door. It was locked, which was strange because the guys were obviously home. Both their cars were parked on the street. He unlocked the door and went inside. Both Carl and Johnny were in the living room watching television. “Hey, what’s going on?”

Johnny mumbled something, and Carl elbowed him in the side. “Nothing,” Carl answered.

“It’s not nothing,” Johnny groused and shifted away from Carl. Johnny had a textbook on his lap, which was a surefire way to make him grumpy. He hated to study and lived for football, beer, and fucking, not necessarily in that order. Classes were a necessary evil so he could keep doing the other three.

“Yes, it is,” Carl countered. “And it’s none of your business.” Carl got up and left the room. He returned with a can of Coke and pulled a book off the coffee table.

Johnny got up and left the room, shooting a scalding look at Freddie before climbing the stairs. Freddie jumped when a door slammed sharply. “What’s with him?”

Carl shook his head slowly and opened the can. “He was waiting for some chick outside one of the dorms and saw you walking with that guy from your biochemistry class. The kid you rescued last week.”

“Kurt,” Freddie supplied, flopping into one of the chairs.

“Yeah, him. And rumor has it you were talking to Coach Josh in his office this afternoon, so naturally, he put two and two together in his pea brain, came up with eleven, and decided you’re gay.”

Freddie went still and couldn’t breathe. He opened his mouth to deny it, but nothing came out. “Carl, I….”

“Holy shit, you are,” Carl said surprisingly calmly. “Well, I’ll be damned.”

“I told you,” Johnny called down the stairs and then slammed the door again. A few seconds later, the door opened. “I’m moving out of here. Ain’t living with a fag,” he added and then slammed the door for the third time. Freddie winced, the insult cutting deeper than he would have expected.

“Then go, pea-brain,” Carl called as he leaned back on the sofa so his voice carried well up the stairs. “Brittany’s brother is gay, and he’s a good kid.”

Freddie’s head spun. “Good God, who else knows?”

“Doesn’t matter, by the time gossipy Gerty up there gets done, everyone on campus will know.” Carl drank from his can. “It doesn’t matter to me at all. In fact, I’ve sort of wondered. You never seemed comfortable around girls. You liked them well enough, but never chased them like the rest of us. Makes sense now.” Carl gulped once more from his can, and Freddie desperately wanted a drink, preferably vodka.
